Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is celebrating breaking the Guinness World Record for the 'World's Largest Bird Seed Cake'!

imageLed by Trust Information Officer, Natalie Rogers and under the watchful eyes of a team of adjudicators and Autumnwatch presenter and vice-president of the trust, Chris Packham, the making of the cake was carried out by a team of willing staff and volunteers, including BGL Rieber's Jeff Fishlock.

The final weight of the cake was 1.37 tonnes, beating the existing record of 1.29 tonnes, held by Kent Wildlife Trust.

Using 992lb (450kg) of flour, 1,653lb (750kg) of suet and 882lb (400kg) of seeds, Jeff used a Hackman Metos catering kettle to melt the suet, which was poured over the seed and flour and then mixed by shovels, spades and even oars.

imageWhen it cools, the suet binds the seeds together to make the 'cake', which is estimated will feed around 10,000 birds through the winter. Slices were handed out to the public to put in their gardens.
